Nico Medina's world is 11 miles away from mine. During the day, it's a place where doors are open - where homes are lived in, and neighbors love. But when the sun sets, it becomes a place where young boys are afraid, where eyes watch from idling cars that hide in the shadows and wicked smoke flows from pipes. West End is the kind of place that people survive. It buries them - one at a time, one way or another. And when Nico was a little boy, his mom always told him to run.

I'm Reagan Prescott - coach's daughter, sister to the prodigal son, daughter in the perfect family. Life on top. Lies. My world is the ugly one. Private school politics and one of the best high school football programs in the country can break even the toughest souls. Our darkness plays out in whispers and rumors, and money and status trump all. I would know - I've watched it kill my family slowly, strangling us for years. In our twisted world, a boy from West End is the only shining light. Quarterback. Hero. Heart. Good. I hated him before I needed him. I fell for him fast. I loved him when it was almost too late. When two ugly worlds collide, even the strongest fall. But my world...it hasn't met the boy from West End.

Our two main characters are Reagan and Nico. They come from socially and geographically opposite worlds. They live in the same town, just one of them leaves on the wrong side of the tracks. On the West End there is drug dealers, gangs, and drive by shootings; all of which are normal for those on that side of town. This is how where Nico grew up. He had to learn when and where to go. Who to avoid and safes roots to get home. Drive by shootings was something he was familiar with.

Eleven miles in the other direction Reagan lives. Her family puts up a go front for all the neighbors and those of importance, but behind the closed doors they are a family falling apart. Her twin brother, Noah, who is the golden boy in football, is arrogant and cocky. While Reagan keeps to herself and her academics. She was recognized in the committee and in school, as the Coach Prescott’s daughter. Not many knew her has the aspiring filmography or an avid member of the debate team. But Nico knew.

This book was incredible. I really have enjoyed reading many of Ginger Scott’s books. She writes a mix of YA and NA. This book is more Mature YA because of the swearing. I don’t want to give the story away but there are a few themes within this book.

Discrimination. It is a large part of the book. There is discrimination on all fronts from: race, social economical, geographical home location, school affiliate, gender, etc. Ginger hits on some hard topics. I think it is interesting because I great up in Southern California and there were Latino/Hispanic people everywhere. I mean it was the norm. I didn’t know anything different. Heck my husband is Hispanic, so I am now submersed into that culture. We live now on the east where it is more dominantly African American. There have been certain places in our travels that we have been treated differently because of what people perceive us. My husband told me he was used to it, that it is common. My African American friends said that racism is still alive and strong. It dumbfounds me. This book brings this issue to light.

Sports and Politics. Agggg I have never been in a situation where there is aboard over a sports team in High school. The whole situation is crazy, but I do know they are out there. It is like House of Cards in High School with parents and administrators, but they are messing with the students. I drove me nuts. Not the bad nuts, where it ruined the book. Nope, not that kind. I mean where I just wanted to jump into the book and beat the crap out of some of these characters.

Ginger Scott, I am going to tell you this. You had me at the end of the book. I thought one thing and you through me for a loop. I am glad the way you end it, but don’t mess with my heart like that again. I don’t think I can take it. And all of you who have read this book, know exactly what I am talking about.

The Hard Count (Audible Audio Edition) Ginger Scott Kai Kennicott Wen Ross Little Miss Write LLC Ginger Scott Books Reviews

I seen this book for awhile, popping up after different books I read on my kindle, the cover and description intrigued me. Yet I kept postponing for some reason to purchase it. I finally decided to get it, but again I postponed reading it. Maybe I knew it would be one of those stories you read that just can never be forgotten. My title for this review, POWERFUL, just one adjective for book. It's also inspirational, influential, memorable, emotional... REAL. It's hard to find a storyline that hits so Many might think that what happened in this story is overblown like so many movies seem, yet I know first hand, from both points of view that it is in fact life for too many. These characters, not just Nico & Reagan, but all those around them, come together to make this story unique but also shows the challenges each has to overcome in their own way. Its not just a story of racial & economical adversity but a variety of facets. Personally my reviews never go over the plot as so many others do, I write my reviews based of what I perceived from reading this. And honestly, very few of my reviews are this long. Words can't describe adequately how well written and complete this book is. This story, in this genre, can't be competed with. Thank you Ms Scott for writing such a profoundly potent story.
The Hook Reagan and Nico live in two different worlds just a few miles apart. He’s from the wrong side of the tracks, on scholarship at a school his family could never afford. She’s the daughter of the revered football coach and sister of the quarterback, living a life filled with opportunity and privilege. And every time these two open their mouths around each other, it’s to argue.

When Reagan’s brother is injured and benched, it’s Reagan who points out Nico to her father. Having been at her father’s right hand through his career, she knows unpolished talent when she sees it. She’s got the answer to her father’s dilemma and a great subject for her documentary.

The Verdict Nico’s not at the school to play football; he’s there to learn and make something of his life, a life that could easily have gone the other direction. With a brother who got into more trouble than he should have survived before heading off to the military, Nico is the one who looks out for his sister and little niece at home. And both he and Reagan are about to get a lesson in the politics of money and prestige.

Reagan is a bit on the naive side, but her eyes are opened when Nico takes the field with her father’s team. She already knows how intelligent he is and has seen how skilled he is, but as he begins to play a bigger role in her days, she also sees what he’s up against. He’s the poor, Mexican kid in the rich, mostly white school, and no matter what he brings to the game, the system works against him.

It’s impossible to describe The Hard Count just as a romance. There are lessons in class and race, all the innocence of young love, the politics of a school that’s controlled by big money, the rise of crime in neighborhoods filled with good but financially strapped people, and the meaning of family and loyalty. Football, of course, plays a big part in it, and at times it even works as a metaphor for everything else that’s happening, but it’s not just page after page of plays. It’s more like Firday Night Lights, in the sense that the setting is a game but the story is in the characters and the incredible emotions they evoke.

Ginger Scott writes young love the way it’s experienced — sweet and idealistic, overwhelming and seemingly impossible, and as bumpy and unpredictable as life itself. I’ve devoured her other books and impatiently awaited the next ones, and with each new read, I’ve felt like I’ve found a new favorite. But The Hard Count is so much more than I’ve ever loved in a book before it.
